Policy briefs

During the spring of 2021, Danish Red Cross convened a number international experts, practitioners, diplomats and policymakers in a series of events to provide recommendations for addressing key humanitarian issues in the new Danish strategy for development cooperation and humanitarian assistance: the humanitarian consequences of climate change, youth engagement, international humanitarian law, and innovative financing mechanisms to support anticipatory action. You can listen to recordings of the events and read our key recommendations in the policy briefs below.

Involvement of young people

On 21 April 2021, Danish Red Cross Youth and partners convened an online event on youth involvement in humanitarian work. Youth make up 1,8 billion people globally, with the large majority in poor and fragile countries. Youth is both a vulnerable group, but also a strong driver of change. At the event, youth representatives shared experiences on youth engagement and leadership – and on how youth can come out stronger of crises situations, if we ensure they are part of the solution and involve them in the humanitarian work.

International Humanitarian Law and protection of civilians

On 19 April 2021, Danish Refugee Council and Danish Red Cross convened an event to explore the humanitarian and protection challenges following from breaches of international humanitarian law. International experts, practitioners and representatives of the Danish government shared experiences with how they can be mitigated by promoting respect for international humanitarian law and other good practices for protection of civilians, through engagement with local actors, peer-to-peer exchanges and an increased focus on conflict resolution and local peacebuilding.

Innovative financing

To address the increasing needs related to conflicts, fragility and climate-related disasters, Danish Red Cross and partners launched a Nordic Innovative Finance Forum to inspire new ways and sources of funding for addressing global financing needs to address these challenges. Through quantifying and forecasting risks and impact, speakers shared their experiences with frontloading instruments for preventive work, like vaccine bonds; insurance-related solutions like catastrophe bonds; results-based finance like social impact bonds; and scaling up of bankable solutions through impact investments. The first Nordic Innovative Finance Forum will be followed by a series of deep dives into instruments, the first held in May on Disaster Risk Insurance Solutions.
